Det Eviga är ett symfoniskt verk, beställt av Norrlandsoperans Symfoniorkester, där musik och poesi förenas i en klanglig reflektion över tidens gång och det beständiga i tillvaron. Inspirerad av Esaias Tegnérs dikt Det Eviga gestaltar musiken dess centrala teman – förgänglighet, förändring och det som står över allt mänskligt förfall – genom ett uttrycksfullt och dynamiskt orkesterspråk.
Verket är tillägnat minnet av dirigenten och tonsättaren Leif Segerstam, en av Nordens mest särpräglade musikpersonligheter. Hans anda anas i den expansiva klangbehandlingen, de rika harmonierna och den organiska utvecklingen av musikaliska gestalter. Som en hyllning till honom bygger verkets tonföljd på E–F–Ess–E–G–E–Ess–A – en musikalisk kod som tillsammans bildar namnet Leif Segerstam.
Undertiteln Sång utan ord antyder en instrumentalt sjungande kvalitet, där orkesterns färger och uttryck förmedlar diktens essens utan behov av text. Här låter jag musiken bära orden – melodiska linjer väver sig genom hela verket likt en osynlig röst, från spröda, svävande fraser till kraftfulla utbrott. Ljusa och mörka klangfält rör sig genom musiken, ett eko av både Tegnérs poetiska vision och Segerstams mäktiga musikaliska arv.
Genom Det Eviga ville jag skapa en hyllning som inte bara blickar bakåt, utan också framåt – en klanglig meditation över konstens odödlighet och dess förmåga att överleva tidens gång.
The Eternal (Det Eviga) is a symphonic work commissioned by the Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra, where music and poetry merge into a sonic reflection on the passage of time and the permanence of existence. Inspired by Esaias Tegnér’s poem The Eternal, the music embodies its central themes—transience, transformation, and that which stands above all human decay—through an expressive and dynamic orchestral language.
The work is dedicated to the memory of conductor and composer Leif Segerstam, one of the Nordic region’s most distinctive musical figures. His spirit echoes in the expansive treatment of sound, the rich harmonies, and the organic evolution of musical gestures. As a tribute to him, the piece is built on the tonal sequence E–F–E-flat–E–G–E–E-flat–A—musically spelling out the name Leif Segerstam.
The subtitle Song Without Words suggests an instrumentally singing quality, where the colors and expressions of the orchestra convey the essence of the poem without the need for text. Here, the music itself carries the words—melodic lines weave through the piece like an invisible voice, from delicate, floating phrases to powerful outbursts. Shifting between bright and dark tonal landscapes, the music becomes an echo of both Tegnér’s poetic vision and Segerstam’s grand musical legacy.
With The Eternal, I sought to create a tribute that not only looks back but also forward—a meditative exploration of music’s timelessness and its ability to transcend the passing of time.
